NGOMA: What prevents the child from eating enough are mothers who don’t know how to feed the child well. That is why we want to inform the mother so that she knows.17

Here Ngoma adopted a point of view that was little different from the many governmental and NGO campaigns, from colonial to postcolonial times, to define motherhood as a site of intervention by nonkin experts.18 The specter of malnutrition arose from mothers’ lack of knowledge, never mind the intergenerational care that attended childbirth even among residents in Chipata town.19 That some mothers may not have access to enough food was not mentioned, in spite of Ngoma’s enthusiasm for the “holistic health” concept mentioned above that included socioeconomic dimensions. Yet Ngoma did not typecast her public of young mothers merely as ignorant village women, because she also had in mind the predicament of motherhood in urban areas. While expounding on the benefits of breastfeeding, she had the young man read out a question about that predicament:
